This policy explains how Find My Phone Launcher
(package com.overmax.findmyphonebyclaplauncher), published on Google Play by
OverMax, accesses, collects, uses and shares information. It applies to
this app and to its web dashboard at
find-my-phone-overmax.web.app.
What this app does
Find My Phone Launcher helps you find your phone: when it hears you clap three times or whistle, it plays an alarm (and, if you choose, flashes the flashlight and vibrates). With the optional Find Your Phone From Anywhere feature you can also see your phone on a map and make it ring from another device. The app can replace your home screen, so it can keep listening reliably, and it includes a search screen with public news headlines and a weather screen. It is free and paid for by advertising.
The microphone: clap and whistle detection
Audio never leaves your phone. Nothing is recorded, stored or uploaded.
To recognise a clap or a whistle, the app analyses the sound from the microphone on your device, a few milliseconds at a time, and discards it immediately. It only looks for the pattern of a clap or of a whistle; it does not recognise speech or words, and no audio is sent to us, to Google or to anyone else.
Detection runs in a foreground service, with a persistent notification (“Find my phone detection is ON”), so it keeps working while the screen is off. You can turn clap detection, whistle detection, or both off at any time from the app. While your phone is playing sound itself (a video, music, a call) detection is ignored, so the phone's own speaker cannot set off the alarm.
Find Your Phone From Anywhere (optional)
This feature is off until you turn it on and create an account. If you use it:
- Your account: your email address and password, or your Google account, handled by Google Firebase Authentication. We never see your password.
- Your phone's location: your phone's precise location, the street address worked out from it on your phone, the time it was last seen, its battery level and whether it is charging, and whether it is on Wi‑Fi or mobile data (not the name of the network). It is uploaded about every 15 minutes and when you ask for it from the dashboard, so you can see the last known location even if the phone is later switched off. This requires the location permission set to “Allow all the time”.
- Your phone's name and model, so you can tell your phones apart.
This information is stored in Google Firebase (Cloud Firestore) under your account, and only you can read it, after logging in, from the app's Dashboard or from the web dashboard. The dashboards also let you make your phone ring or ask it for its current location. We do not use this information for advertising, we do not sell it, and we do not share it with anyone.
The map in the dashboards is drawn with OpenStreetMap map tiles, which are loaded from OpenStreetMap's servers like on any website that shows their maps. Your coordinates are not sent to them; the map is simply centred on them in your browser.
Keeping and deleting it. The last location of each phone is kept until you remove it. Log out removes that phone and its data from your account. Delete account (in the app: Find My Phone card → account icon; or on the web dashboard) deletes your account and the data of all your phones immediately and permanently. See how to delete your account.
Other information
The app also works with the following, all of it on your device:
- Your alarm settings (sound, volume, sensitivity, duration, flashlight and vibration), saved in the app's private storage.
- The list of apps you have installed, so it can draw your home screen and the app drawer. This list never leaves your device.
- Your home screen layout (icon order, folders, hidden icons, widgets, recently opened apps), saved in the app's private storage.
- Approximate location, used to show the weather (see Weather).
- What you type in the search bar, only while you are typing. It is sent to Google's public suggestion service so it can offer suggestions, and it is never stored by us.
We use Google Firebase Analytics and Firebase Crashlytics to count usage events (for example, that detection was turned on, that the alarm went off, or that the app crashed) and to receive crash reports with device model and Android version. These events never include audio, your location or your email, which app you opened, which website you visited, or what you searched for.
Permissions and why
| Permission | Why the app needs it |
|---|---|
RECORD_AUDIO | To hear claps and whistles. The sound is analysed on your device and discarded; it is never recorded or sent. |
FOREGROUND_SERVICE, FOREGROUND_SERVICE_MICROPHONE | To keep listening for claps and whistles while the screen is off, with a persistent notification. |
ACCESS_FINE_LOCATION, ACCESS_BACKGROUND_LOCATION, FOREGROUND_SERVICE_LOCATION | Optional. Only for Find Your Phone From Anywhere: to show your phone on the map and update its location while the app is closed. |
ACCESS_COARSE_LOCATION | Optional. For the weather where you are (see Weather). |
REQUEST_IGNORE_BATTERY_OPTIMIZATIONS | Optional. So the system does not cut the connection that lets you make your phone ring from the dashboard while it is asleep. |
POST_NOTIFICATIONS | For the detection notification and the alarm notification with its Stop button. |
USE_FULL_SCREEN_INTENT | To show the “Here I am!” alarm screen over the lock screen when your phone is found. |
MODIFY_AUDIO_SETTINGS | To play the alarm at the volume you chose, even in silent mode, and restore your volume afterwards. |
VIBRATE, FLASHLIGHT | Optional alarm effects you can turn on. |
INTERNET, ACCESS_NETWORK_STATE | To load ads, the news headlines, the weather and, if you use it, Find Your Phone From Anywhere. |
SET_WALLPAPER | To set a wallpaper you pick from the wallpapers screen. |
REQUEST_DELETE_PACKAGES | To open the system uninstall dialog when you choose to uninstall an app from the home screen. You always confirm it. |
SET_ALARM | To open your phone's own clock app when you tap the time on the home screen. |
AD_ID | Used by Google AdMob to serve and measure ads (see Advertising). |
Package visibility (a <queries> declaration) | To list the apps you can open, as any home screen app does. We do not use QUERY_ALL_PACKAGES. |
Advertising
The app shows ads from Google AdMob. AdMob may collect and process data as described in Google's privacy policy, including a device advertising identifier, in order to serve and measure ads:
In the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom and Switzerland we ask for your consent before personalised ads are served, using Google's certified consent tool. You can change that choice at any time from Menu → Do Not Sell or Share My Personal Information inside the app, which also lets residents of US states with privacy laws opt out.
Measuring our ad campaigns (Meta)
The app includes the Meta (Facebook) SDK to measure app installs and how our advertising campaigns on Facebook and Instagram perform. When it is active, it sends Meta your device's advertising identifier, basic device information (such as model and Android version), your IP address and a few app events: that the app was opened, that it was set as your home screen, and that the app drawer was opened.
It does not send audio, your location, your account or your phone's data from Find Your Phone From Anywhere, which apps you have or open, or what you search for. In the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom and Switzerland it is only used after you give consent in the same consent tool used for ads. Meta processes this information under its own policy:
Weather
To show the temperature on the home screen and the weather screen, the app needs to know roughly where you are:
- If you grant the location permission, the app uses your phone's approximate location.
- If you do not, the app asks a public IP geolocation service (ipwho.is, or as a fallback GeoJS or ipapi.co) for the approximate city of your internet connection. That service sees your IP address, as any website you visit does.
The coordinates, rounded to one decimal (a grid of about 11 km), are then sent to Open-Meteo to get the current temperature, the forecast and the air quality index. We do not send any identifier with those requests.
News, search and wallpapers
The search screen shows public news headlines read from the publishers' own public RSS feeds (such as ABC News, NBC News, NPR, Fox News, New York Post, CBS News, CNET, The Verge and Variety). Those publishers see the request the way any browser or feed reader would. Opening a headline opens the publisher's own page in a browser tab, where that publisher's privacy policy applies. While you type in the search bar, what you have typed is sent to Google's public suggestion service; web searches open in your browser with the search engine you choose. The wallpapers screen loads photos from Unsplash. We do not send an identifier with any of these requests.
Children
The app is not directed to children under 13 and we do not knowingly collect data from them.
Your choices
- Turn clap detection, whistle detection, or both off at any time from the app.
- Use the app without an account: clap and whistle detection works without one.
- Log out to remove a phone from your account, or delete your account and all its data from the app or from the web.
- Revoke the microphone, location and notification permissions from your phone's Settings at any time.
- Stop using the app as your home screen from Menu → Disable Find My Phone Launcher, or from your phone's Settings.
- Change your personalised-ads choice from Menu → Do Not Sell or Share My Personal Information (shown in the regions where it applies).
- Uninstalling the app, or clearing its data, removes everything it saved on your device. If you created an account, delete it first to also remove its data from our servers.
Changes to this policy
If we change how the app handles information, we will update this page and the date at the top of it.
